My Last Rant - I Promise ;)

I’ve written before about Twitter Losing Respect and my disappointment in how the the Twitter Trends worked and also how some of the “big” users were starting to unfollow HUGE amounts of Twits due to getting “spammy” Direct Messages.

Today I wanted to re-visit that debate and expand on it, because it still pisses me off (excuse the french!). As I write this “Snow Leopard” is one of the top trending topic because Apple have just released their newest OS X which is great (I’m a HUGE Mac fan). Now for someone who isn’t online as much as me (take my Dad for instance) and they wanted to know why Snow Leopard was trending they could have a look and this is what they would find:

Now apart from telling you some idiot is SPAMMING the crap out of twitter by using 3 of the top 5 Twitter trends to get their affiliate link some traffic, what does it tell you? It tells me nothing about what Snow Leopard is. Okay, so you might be saying “Well that’s just one tweet Spamming the trends”. Oh if only that were true! Look at the below 6 tweets and their are only 2 Tweets giving me any idea on why Snow Leopard is trending, 1 is from a RSS feed and the other doesn’t really give me much idea about it anyway!

So your probably now saying “who cares?”, well obviously I care because i’ve now written two posts expressing my annoyance on this topic, but I’ve had conversations with hundreds of others on Twitter who hate this almost as much as I do. Think about it, Twitter is quick becoming the top place to get up-to-date news and information but how are you ment to find out anything when the trends are dominated but either Twitter bots or Spammers trying to get traffic to an affiliate link or worse a virus.

C’mon Twitter clean this crap up!

I have to agree with you. I’m only new at twitting but about 3 times today I think I’m about to read a tweet about breaking news and instead of finding out something important happened, the link takes me to a sales page. I do go and look at some sales pages but at least let me know that’s what I’m going to be opening and be honest with me. I close them as soon as I realise what they are and unfollow people who do that.
